Assamese jewellery, Ranthali, Nagaon

Dibyajyoti Bhuyan has been making Assamese jewellery since 2003, in a tradition he traces back to his great-great-grandfather's time and beyond. In Ranthali village, he says, more than 500 families are part of this jewellery-making heritage. He works in pure silver and 24-carat gold. That, he believes, is why his customers remain happy with his pieces.

On a cream display bust against a pale grey ground: a wide engraved gold crescent set with red petal stones around a large red teardrop, fringed with small gold beads, on a chain of pearl-white beads between lines of gold beads. The earrings repeat the crescent, hung from a three-stone bud on two fine chains.
