How these bangles are made

The piece in detail

A hand holds the two bangles, one stacked on the other, against a blurred green wall and a glass counter. Each is a broad gold-toned cuff with a band of square silver-white panels, each raised in four stacked almond shapes, between gold panels engraved with leaves; vines and small dot-flowers run along the borders, and a ball-headed pin shows at the top edge.

What is worked into it

Muthi is the fist and kharu a bangle, and the registration describes the muthikharu as segments that look like closed fingers. On this pair the silver panels run in a band round the middle of each cuff, with narrow gold panels engraved with leaf veins between them.

Above and below, the gold is engraved with a running vine, leaves and small flowers made of dots, with a larger engraved flower beside the pin, whose ball head shows at the top edge, and a fine crosshatch along one edge.

Occasion & styling

For weddings and formal occasions. Wear the two together, one on each wrist or both on one, or a single bangle with something plain.

The gold and the white silver sit well against silk in a deep colour, a saree or a mekhela sador, and against a plain kurta or dress.

The object

No stones and no enamel: the only colours are the gold and the silver panels left white between it.

Care

  • Keep them in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from damp and direct sun.
  • Put on perfume, cream and lotion first and let them dry, and take the bangles off to bathe, swim, exercise or sleep.
  • Wipe them with a soft dry cloth only, the silver panels too: no jewellery dip, no silver polish, no ultrasonic cleaner, nothing abrasive, because the gold is a thin layer over silver.
  • Close the pin gently, and keep the bangles from knocking against hard edges.
