How a necklace set is made

The piece in detail

The necklace and earrings on an ivory display bust against black. A barrel-shaped pendant lies on its side under a diagonal gold lattice, red in every cell, hung from a strand of red and black seed-bead bunches, red oval beads and small gold beads. Two small studs with the same red lattice sit at the neck above.

What is worked into it

Dhulbiri is a drum pendant. This one is small and hangs on its side, its gold lattice running on the diagonal, so the red shows as rows of small diamonds.

The strand is the other half of it. Bunches of fine red seed beads and bunches of black ones alternate down each side, separated by red oval beads and small gold beads, with one gold bead set with red stones just above the pendant on each side; a red tassel finishes it at the back. The earrings are small studs carrying the same red lattice.

Occasion & styling

A set for every day and for work, for dinner out, and for a festival. The black beads among the red make it less of a wedding piece, so it is as easy on a plain kurta or a cotton saree as on silk.

For a festival it suits a cream mekhela sador with a red border, or a red silk saree; for work, a plain kurta in a dark colour.

The object

The dhol is the Assamese folk drum, and the pendant keeps its barrel: fullest at the middle, narrowing to a plain gold cap at each end.

Care

  • Keep it in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from damp and direct sun.
  • Put on perfume, cream and hairspray first and let them dry, and take the set off to bathe, swim, exercise or sleep.
  • Wipe it with a soft dry cloth only: no jewellery dip, no ultrasonic cleaner, nothing abrasive, because the gold is a thin layer over silver.
  • Keep it away from heat, a hairdryer or a car left in the sun, because the drum is filled with lac, which softens at 65 to 70 °C.
  • Lay the strand flat so the bead bunches do not twist, and keep the tassel dry.
