Piju Moni Das

Tussar, Muga and Paat weaving, Sualkuchi, Kamrup

Piju Moni Das is a third-generation maker of Assamese Mekhela Sador and sarees. The saree is her first love, because it lets her create the designs herself. She is especially fond of traditional designs such as Kingkhaap. Through her work, she hopes today's generation will come to value the tradition behind what they wear.

Seated against the beam of a loom, lifting the pallu at her shoulder so it falls open in front of her: a marigold body scattered with small pink kalka above a rani-pink field of gold creeper ending in pink tassels. Worn with a red sleeveless blouse, warp threads and a lamp in the shed behind.
