How a necklace set is made

The piece in detail

The necklace and earrings on a black display bust against black. A round flower of sixteen red petals around a green ring hangs from a fine gold chain, three short gold-ball drops below it and a red-set bead on the chain at each side. The earrings are smaller flowers on fine chains from three-stone studs, each ending in two gold-ball drops.

What is worked into it

Fular comes from phul, the Assamese for a flower, and the pendant is one: a ring of red petals, each edged in gold, around a green ring that holds a small flower of four red petals. Three short chains hang below it, each ending in a gold ball and a tiny red bead.

The chain is fine and plain, with a round bead set with red stones on each side. The earrings are smaller flowers with a single red stone inside the green ring, hung on two fine chains from a three-stone stud and finished with two gold-ball drops.

Occasion & styling

A small, light set to wear often: to work, to a puja at home, to a small gathering. The chain is fine and the flower small, so it goes over most necklines without crowding them.

It sits on a plain cotton or silk saree, a Tussar or Paat mekhela sador for the day, or a kurta; the green at its centre picks up a green border.

The object

Sixteen petals on the pendant and ten on each earring.

Care

  • Keep it in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from damp and direct sun.
  • Put on perfume, cream and hairspray first and let them dry, and take the set off to bathe, swim, exercise or sleep.
  • Wipe it with a soft dry cloth only: no jewellery dip, no ultrasonic cleaner, nothing abrasive, because the gold is a thin layer over silver.
  • Keep it away from heat, a hairdryer or a car left in the sun, because the stones sit in lac, which softens at 65 to 70 °C.
  • Lay it flat in its box so the fine chain does not knot.
