How these earrings are made

The piece in detail

The pair hanging in front of a broad variegated leaf, green streaked with cream, more leaves blurred behind. Each earring is a rosette of red stones around a red teardrop, a second red teardrop below it, and a gold bell set with red stones and fringed with small gold beads.

What is worked into it

A jhumka is a bell-shaped earring, and here the bell comes last. At the top is a rosette: a large red teardrop ringed by small round red stones, each in its own gold rim. A second, smaller teardrop sits below it.

From that, on a small ring, hangs the bell. Long red stones run down its dome from the top, with round ones between them near the rim, and a fringe of small gold beads circles the edge.

Occasion & styling

With a saree or a mekhela sador, or a plain kurta for a smaller occasion. The crimson stands out against ivory, gold-beige or green silk; against a red blouse the gold bells carry it instead.

Wear the hair back or up so the bells hang clear and can move.

The object

The bell hangs from the teardrop on a small ring, so it swings free of the rosette above it.

Care

  • Store the pair on its own in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from damp and direct sun, so the gold fringes do not tangle with other pieces.
  • Put on perfume, cream and hairspray first and let them dry, and take the earrings off to bathe, swim, exercise or sleep.
  • Wipe them with a soft dry cloth only: no jewellery dip, no ultrasonic cleaner, nothing abrasive, because the gold is a thin layer over silver.
  • Keep them away from heat, a hairdryer or a car left in the sun, because each frame is filled with lac, which softens at 65 to 70 °C.
  • Handle the stones gently and keep the bells from catching on hair or cloth.
