How a necklace set is made

The piece in detail

On a pale velvet display bust against black: a large horizontal gold barrel worked as a lattice, a red stone in every opening, hanging from bunched strands of red seed beads gathered with pairs of gold beads. Two small lattice studs sit on the platform at the top of the bust.

What is worked into it

The dhol is the Assamese folk drum, and the dhulbiri is the pendant made in its shape: a bulbous barrel worn on its side. This is a large one. Gold bands cross its whole surface in a diagonal lattice, a deep red stone fills every opening, and plain gold caps close both ends.

It hangs from many fine strands of bright red seed beads, bunched together and gathered at pairs of gold-finished silver beads. Near the pendant the strands give way to a short run of gold beads, with a gold bead set with red stones on each side.

The earrings are small studs in the same lattice.

Occasion & styling

For a wedding, a puja or a formal dinner, and enough to be the only jewellery you wear. The barrel sits best against a plain field: a solid blouse, or the plain body of a mekhela sador or a saree rather than a worked border.

The studs stay quiet beside the drum, so keep everything else simple.

The object

The studs are the same drum as the pendant, halved along its length.

Care

  • Lay it flat in a soft pouch or a lined box so the many strands do not knot, away from damp and direct sun.
  • Put on perfume, cream and hairspray first and let them dry, and take the set off to bathe, swim, exercise or sleep.
  • Wipe it with a soft dry cloth only: no jewellery dip, no ultrasonic cleaner, nothing abrasive, because the gold is a thin layer over silver.
  • Keep it away from heat, a hairdryer or a car left in the sun, because the drum is filled with lac, which softens at 65 to 70 °C.
  • Handle the stones gently and keep the lattice from catching on cloth.
