How a necklace set is made

The piece in detail

The necklace and earrings on an ivory display bust on a shop's glass counter, a pink wall behind. Two strands of dark green beads, ending in plain gold-toned beads, carry a broad gold-faced crescent set with rows of small red stones, a fan of red petals standing on its top edge and a fringe of gold drops. Three-tier earrings set with red hang at the neck.

What is worked into it

Junbiri is the crescent, and the half star is the maker's own name for the fan that stands on its top edge: pointed red petals and square stones opening around a round one. Below it the crescent is set across its width with rows of small red stones in a leaf pattern, under an engraved band along the top, with a large red drop at each shoulder, a bud of red stones at each tip and a fringe of gold drops.

It hangs from two strands of dark green beads, each with a gold bead set with red stones on either side, which turn to plain gold beads where they meet the pendant. The earrings stack three pieces: a bud of three red stones, a fan of red petals, and a small crescent set with red and fringed with gold.

Occasion & styling

A set for weddings, receptions and festive evenings. The crescent is broad and hangs low on the two strands, so it wants an open or deep neckline with nothing else at the throat.

Dark green beads and red stones sit well on a cream or golden mekhela sador, Paat or Muga, or on a red silk saree; a dark green blouse picks up the beads.

The object

The green strands hook straight onto the petals of the fan, which stands on the crescent's top edge, so fan and moon hang as one piece.

Care

  • Keep it in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from damp and direct sun.
  • Put on perfume, cream and hairspray first and let them dry, and take the set off to bathe, swim, exercise or sleep.
  • Wipe it with a soft dry cloth only: no jewellery dip, no ultrasonic cleaner, nothing abrasive, because the gold is a thin layer over silver.
  • Keep it away from heat, a hairdryer or a car left in the sun, because the crescent is filled with lac, which softens at 65 to 70 °C.
  • Lay the two green strands flat, side by side, so they do not twist round each other.
