How a necklace set is made

The piece in detail

The necklace and earrings on a black velvet bust against a dark green velvet drape. Two strands of white pearl-like beads turn to gold beads and red lotus links, and a larger red lotus hangs a crescent with a bright green face, set with a six-petal red flower between two smaller rosettes and fringed with white drops. The earrings are small green crescents with three red stones and white drops.

What is worked into it

Two strands of pearl-white beads turn to gold beads at the front, then to a lotus link of red stones on each side, and the links meet at a larger lotus of red petals, with the crescent hanging below it.

The crescent's face is green between its stones. At the centre is a red flower of six petals around a round stone, with a small square stone between each pair of petals; a smaller rosette sits either side, and leaf-shaped stones run towards the tips, which end in red buds. A fringe of pearl-white drops runs along the lower edge. The earrings are small green crescents with three red stones and the same white drops, hung on two fine chains from a three-stone stud.

Occasion & styling

A set for weddings, receptions and formal evenings. The white strands are quiet and the crescent is not, so give it a plain blouse with an open neckline.

Green, red and white sit well on cream, ivory or golden silk, a Paat or Muga mekhela sador or a saree with a gold border, and on deep red.

The object

Here the half star, the maker's own name for the fan, is a lotus of seven red petals over a round stone, hung on two small rings above the crescent.

Care

  • Keep it in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from damp and direct sun.
  • Put on perfume, cream and hairspray first and let them dry, and take the set off to bathe, swim, exercise or sleep.
  • Wipe it with a soft dry cloth only: no jewellery dip, no ultrasonic cleaner, nothing abrasive, because the gold is a thin layer over silver.
  • Keep it away from heat, a hairdryer or a car left in the sun, because the stones sit in lac, which softens at 65 to 70 °C.
  • Keep perfume, cream and water off the white beads as well as the metal, and lay the two strands flat, side by side.
