How a necklace set is made

The piece in detail

On a white acrylic necklace stand against a soft cream ground: a small gold teardrop pendant of red stones, a large red teardrop ringed by small ovals with a gold drop below, on plain gold beads and gold beads set with red stones that lead up to twisted strands of red seed beads. A red cord and tassel lie at the foot of the stand, and the studs, with stone-set gold ball drops, sit on the round platform at its top.

What is worked into it

This dugdugi is small and narrow: a large red teardrop at the centre, ringed by eight oval stones in beaded gold rims, a second teardrop below, and a gold bead tipped with a tiny red one at the very bottom.

Monimala means a necklace of beads. The lower half of this one is plain gold-finished silver beads, with four gold beads set with red stones among them; higher up it turns to twisted strands of fine red seed beads, and it finishes at the back with a red cord and tassel.

The earrings are studs of three red stones, each with a stone-set gold ball on a short chain below.

Occasion & styling

A quiet set for everyday wear, for work, a small gathering or a temple visit, and an easy first piece of Assamese jewellery to give. It goes with a plain kurta, a cotton saree or a mekhela sador worn for the day.

The red reads best against ivory, beige, green or blue.

The object

The dugdugi takes its name from the sound of a heartbeat, doog doog, and its shape from the heart.

Care

  • Keep it in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from damp and direct sun.
  • Put on perfume, cream and hairspray first and let them dry, and take the set off to bathe, swim, exercise or sleep.
  • Wipe it with a soft dry cloth only: no jewellery dip, no ultrasonic cleaner, nothing abrasive, because the gold is a thin layer over silver.
  • Keep it away from heat, a hairdryer or a car left in the sun, because the pendant is filled with lac, which softens at 65 to 70 °C.
  • Keep the cord and tassel dry, and handle the stones gently.
