How a necklace set is made

The piece in detail

On a cream display bust against a pale grey ground: a wide engraved gold crescent set with red petal stones around a large red teardrop, fringed with small gold beads, on a chain of pearl-white beads between lines of gold beads. The earrings repeat the crescent, hung from a three-stone bud on two fine chains.

What is worked into it

The pendant is a junbiri, a crescent named for the moon, made as a gezera: a hollow shell filled with lac and covered in gold foil. At the centre a large red teardrop points down, ringed by small round stones, with a second teardrop below. Red petal-shaped stones follow the curve on both sides, a fringe of small gold beads runs round the lower edge, and each tip rises into a small bud of red stones.

Pearl-white beads run down the middle of the chain with small gold beads along both edges. Near the pendant it changes to larger gold beads, with a gold bead set with red stones on each side.

The earrings are the crescent in small: three red stones on an engraved half-moon fringed with gold beads, hung on two fine chains from a three-stone bud.

Occasion & styling

For a wedding, a reception or an evening function. The pearl-white chain lightens the gold against dark silk, so it sits well over a deep red, maroon or bottle-green blouse, with a Paat or Muga mekhela sador or a saree in a darker shade.

Wear it over a plain or round neckline and let the crescent be the only thing at the neck. The earrings already repeat its shape, so it needs nothing else.

The object

Under the stones, the crescent is engraved with two large leaves, their veins cut in fine parallel lines.

Care

  • Keep it in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from damp and direct sun.
  • Put on perfume, cream and hairspray first and let them dry, and take the set off to bathe, swim, exercise or sleep.
  • Wipe it with a soft dry cloth only: no jewellery dip, no ultrasonic cleaner, nothing abrasive, because the gold is a thin layer over silver.
  • Keep it away from heat, a hairdryer or a car left in the sun, because the crescent is filled with lac, which softens at 65 to 70 °C.
  • Handle the stones gently and keep the bud tips from catching on silk.
