How a necklace set is made

The piece in detail

The necklace on a black display bust, its earrings on their own black stands either side, against a pale grey ground. A V of small medallions, each a green stone ringed with red, runs down to a red lotus and a crescent with a bright green face set with red stones, a bud at each tip and a fringe of gold drops. The earrings hang small green crescents from tops of red stones.

What is worked into it

Haar is a necklace, and this one takes the jethi form: three medallions down each side, each a green drop ringed with red stones, joined by pairs of red leaf-shaped stones and running in a V to a lotus of red petals around a green drop. The lotus holds the crescent on two short links.

The crescent's face is green between its stones: a red drop ringed with small red stones at the centre, sprays of red petals either side, a red bud at each tip and a fringe of gold drops below. The earrings hang a small green crescent of the same kind from a top of red stones, on two fine chains.

Occasion & styling

A set for a wedding, as the bride or as family, and for formal evenings. The medallions run in a V from the neck to the crescent, so it wants a neckline cut wide or deep enough to show all of them.

The red and green read strongly against cream, ivory or golden silk, a Paat or Muga mekhela sador, or a red or green saree with a gold border.

The object

Jethi is the house lizard; the form named for it is a V of small medallions running down to a pendant, and here the pendant is a crescent.

Care

  • Keep it in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from damp and direct sun.
  • Put on perfume, cream and hairspray first and let them dry, and take the set off to bathe, swim, exercise or sleep.
  • Wipe it with a soft dry cloth only: no jewellery dip, no ultrasonic cleaner, nothing abrasive, because the gold is a thin layer over silver.
  • Keep it away from heat, a hairdryer or a car left in the sun, because the stones sit in lac, which softens at 65 to 70 °C.
  • Lay it flat in its box so the medallion links do not twist, and keep them from catching on cloth.
