How a necklace set is made

The piece in detail

On a white display bust against a white ground: a large round gold medallion filled with red petal shapes in two rings, fringed with small gold beads along its lower edge, on a strand of round red beads finished with gold beads near the pendant. The earrings are smaller red discs hung from three-stone buds on fine chains.

What is worked into it

Red petal-shaped stones fill the round medallion in two rings, the outer petals pointing out to the rim and the inner ones round a small three-sided centre, with gold showing in the lines between them. A fringe of small gold beads hangs from the lower half of the rim.

It hangs from a single strand of round red beads. Near the pendant the strand changes to gold-finished silver beads, with a gold bead set with red stones on each side.

The earrings are small round discs, each a flower of red petal stones fringed with gold beads, hung on two fine chains from a three-stone bud.

Occasion & styling

For a wedding, a reception or a dinner, and a set a bride or her family can wear. The single round pendant sits best on a plain neckline in one solid colour, ivory, gold-beige or bottle green, where the red medallion is the only pattern at the neck.

With a mekhela sador, pleat the sador over the shoulder so the medallion stays in view.

The object

The japi is the wide hat of bamboo and palm leaf worn in the paddy fields, and the ornament named after it takes its round shape.

Care

  • Keep it in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from damp and direct sun.
  • Put on perfume, cream and hairspray first and let them dry, and take the set off to bathe, swim, exercise or sleep.
  • Wipe it with a soft dry cloth only: no jewellery dip, no ultrasonic cleaner, nothing abrasive, because the gold is a thin layer over silver.
  • Keep it away from heat, a hairdryer or a car left in the sun, because the medallion is filled with lac, which softens at 65 to 70 °C.
  • Handle the petal stones gently and keep the fringe from catching on cloth.
