The piece in detail

What is worked into it
Junbiri is the crescent moon, from jun, the moon. This one is broad, and its face is engraved from tip to tip in rows of small triangles filled with dots and in bands of fine hatching. At the centre a large red drop sits in a ring of nine small round stones, with a smaller drop below it; at each tip a bud of four red stones turns up and out. A fringe of small gold drops hangs along the whole lower edge.
The chain changes as it comes down: plain round gold beads at the neck, then ribbed beads, with one bead set with red stones on each side. The earrings are small crescents on two fine chains from a three-stone stud, each engraved in fine lines around a single red stone and fringed with gold drops.
Occasion & styling
A set for a wedding or a reception. The crescent is broad and hangs low on a long chain, so it wants an open neckline with nothing else at the throat: a round or boat-neck blouse, or a sador pleated back off the shoulder.
There is little colour in it beyond the red at the centre and the tips, so it sits on almost any silk: a Muga or Paat mekhela sador, a saree with a gold border, or a plain dark dress for an evening.
The object
Most of this crescent carries no stones at all: its face is engraved, and the red is kept to the centre and the two tips.

Care
- Keep it in a soft pouch or a lined box, away from damp and direct sun.
- Put on perfume, cream and hairspray first and let them dry, and take the set off to bathe, swim, exercise or sleep.
- Wipe it with a soft dry cloth only: no jewellery dip, no ultrasonic cleaner, nothing abrasive, because the gold is a thin layer over silver.
- Keep it away from heat, a hairdryer or a car left in the sun, because the crescent is filled with lac, which softens at 65 to 70 °C.
- Hold it by the crescent when you put it on, and keep the fringe and the tip buds from catching on cloth.
