How a Paat saree is made

The piece in detail

Close up where the body meets the pallu: large silver-white paisleys filled with leaf and vine work, a band of small curled paisleys and fine stripes, and the start of the paisley field below.

What is woven into it

Niyor means dew. Every figure on it is woven in silver-white on a deep wine ground.

The body is kept quiet: small eight-petal flowers, spaced well apart. Nearer the pallu comes a single row of large paisleys, each filled with leaf and vine work.

Narrow bands of small curled paisleys frame the pallu above and below. Between them, large paisleys stand row on row, turned right and left in turn, with round flowers and small sprays of leaves in the spaces between.

The pallu hanging from the counter, seen at an angle: the row of large paisleys, the curled band and the dense field of paisleys falling towards a pale tiled floor.

Occasion & styling

For weddings and receptions, pujas, festivals, anniversaries and evening events. A blouse in the same wine keeps the line unbroken; a silver-grey one brings the paisleys forward. Pearls and silver answer the silver-white yarn, and diamonds or white stones do the same.

Let the pallu hang long and open, down the back or over the arm, so the whole field of paisleys shows. At a winter wedding a paisley shawl can go over it: the shawl carries the same figure, so the two look chosen together.

The object

Apart from small flowers and sprays of leaves, every figure on it is a paisley, from the single row before the pallu to the small curled ones in its bands and the large ones that fill it.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Paat.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: the wine ground lies right against the silver-white motifs, and any colour that ran would show on them.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the motifs.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and pale silks and out of direct sun, which fades deep colours, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
