Material & craftsmanship
Tussar silk in its own warm golden beige, gently textured, with a crisp fall that keeps the pleats neat. Every flower and square is a black extra weft, worked in by the weaver’s hand as the cloth grew on the loom; the trimmed ends of each motif thread sit on the reverse.
What arrives

How a Tussar saree is made

The piece in detail

In a black blouse, one hand on a handloom, the pallu gathered across the front: black flowers and squares on golden beige and the floret border along the edge.

What is woven into it

The golden body carries two small black buti that alternate row after row: a rounded flower, and a square geometric figure the weaver calls gamkharu.

Along both edges runs a slim border of twin black lines holding a chain of tiny florets. The pallu opens with a fine band of small motifs, then deepens into a dense black panel of vertical columns, slender stripes alternating with columns of floral rosettes and stepped diamond medallions. It ends in a narrow patterned band and soft black tassels.

Smiling beside the loom, the pallu gathered at the shoulder: rows of small black flowers and squares, and the black columns of the pallu falling to the floor.

Occasion & styling

Golden ground and black detail suit a festival, a puja or a wedding, a cultural evening, a formal daytime function or an office celebration. A black blouse, as in the photographs, keeps the line crisp; a deep red or maroon one adds warmth on festive days.

Gold jewellery suits it, a gamkharu or another broad bangle above all, with small studs or jhumkas. Pin the pallu in neat pleats over the shoulder so the black columns show, or leave it open across the arm to show the whole pattern.

The object

Named for the gamkharu, the broad bangle of Assam. The weaver gives the name to the square buti across the body.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Tussar with black motifs.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, never directly over the motifs.
  • Wrap it in muslin or a cotton bag, never plastic, and keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from damp.
  • Air it now and then and refold it along new lines so creases do not set.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
