How a Paat saree is made

The piece in detail

The pallu laid flat and photographed straight on: red teardrop medallions in a row across the black at the top, then staggered rows of larger scrollwork medallions with chevrons of red dots and small vines between them.

What is woven into it

The body is black, scattered with small red drop-shaped buti, and a slim red border runs along the edge.

The pallu begins with a row of red teardrop medallions, feathered at the edge and filled with curling scroll, then a narrow band of small pointed leaves. Below it the pallu is at its densest: larger scrollwork medallions in staggered rows, separated by chevron bands of red dots and linked by slender flowering vines.

Holding the pallu out at arm's length beside a loom: red teardrop medallions on black, then the pallu's red field and red stripes at its end.

Occasion & styling

Dramatic and spare, it suits festivals, evening weddings and receptions, formal dinners, concerts and cultural events. A plain black blouse keeps the ground unbroken, and a plain red one picks up the motifs; with either, it can be worn the day it arrives, before the blouse piece is stitched.

It needs very little jewellery: a slim gold chain and small earrings, or one bold piece in gold or oxidised silver. Drape the pallu open over the shoulder so the row of medallions runs down the front and the worked end shows in full.

The object

Krishnakoli means the dark, lovely one: a deep black ground, with a single red for every figure on it.
