How a Paat saree is made

The piece in detail

The saree laid along a table and seen at an angle: small turquoise flowers on the royal-blue body give way to a row of feathered teardrop medallions, a band of stepped triangles and the diamond panels of the pallu.

What is woven into it

The body is set with small eight-petal turquoise flowers in neat, evenly spaced rows, and a turquoise border of interlocking chevrons runs along the edge.

The pallu opens with a row of teardrop medallions, each filled with curling scrollwork and edged like a feather. Below them runs a band of small stepped triangles, then the main field: stepped diamond panels filled with tiny flowers, set between zigzag trails of star-shaped blossoms. It closes with a row of large heart-shaped medallions in dense scrollwork.

The body close up, laid flat and in shallow focus: small eight-petal turquoise flowers in spaced rows on royal blue, with faint lines of the weave in the ground.

Occasion & styling

Vivid but calm, it suits festivals, weddings and receptions, pujas, formal dinners and cultural events. Wear it with a royal-blue blouse for one unbroken colour, or a turquoise blouse to echo the motifs.

The object

Named for the aparajita, the blue butterfly pea flower, and woven in two blues only: turquoise on royal blue.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Paat.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the motifs.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and pale silks and out of direct sun, which can fade a deep blue, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
