How a Paat saree is made

The piece in detail

Closer on the top of the pallu where it hangs over the counter: golden flower sprigs above panels of paired birds, beside a broad border of leaves and paisleys on a fine golden lattice.

What is woven into it

The body is bright red, scattered with small golden square buti, each like a tiny window with four dots inside. Just before the pallu stands a row of flower sprigs: a round bloom on a stem, with a leaf on either side.

The pallu opens with a slim band of small fan-shaped motifs. Its main field is a grid of rectangular panels, each holding a pair of birds facing each other, divided by bands of leafy vine and columns of small four-petal flowers. Below the grid runs a row of paisleys (kalka) and leaf medallions, and the pallu ends in golden stripes and a soft red fringe.

A broad golden border of paisleys and leaf medallions, set on a fine lattice, runs along the edge.

The red body close up and in shallow focus: small golden squares, each like a window with four dots inside, spaced across the silk.

Occasion & styling

For weddings and receptions, festivals, pujas, anniversaries and family celebrations. Wear it with a matching red blouse, or a golden one to pick up the border.

This is a saree for gold jewellery: a necklace, bangles and jhumkas all sit naturally against the red. Wear the pallu long and open at the back so the bird panels and the paisley band show in full.

The object

Kumkum is the red powder of blessing, and the saree keeps to it: a bright red ground, with every figure in golden thread.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Paat with golden thread.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the golden motifs.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and pale silks and out of direct sun, which can fade red, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
