₹19,900

Material & craftsmanship
Tussar silk in a soft cream with a natural golden glow, gently textured, with a light, crisp fall that keeps the pleats in shape. Every heart, flower and scroll is a red or black extra weft, laid in by the weaver’s hand row by row as the cloth grew on the loom; the cut ends of each motif thread sit on the reverse.

How a Tussar saree is made

The piece in detail

The pallu drawn across the front over a black blouse, one hand on the wall: wide red lattice bands between cream rows of paired red and black medallions, the red border along its edge.

What is woven into it

The cream body carries small stepped buti, each crowned with tiny florets, in vermilion red and black and set in alternate rows, small enough to keep the body light.

A bold red border of linked scrolls, dotted with tiny black diamonds, runs the full length of both edges. The pallu carries the weight of the pattern: wide red bands of geometric lattice, edged with fine black and red lines, alternate with cream rows of large heart-shaped medallions worked in pairs, one red and one black, with small black flowers between them. It closes with fine red stripes and a soft fringe.

From behind, in a black blouse: the pallu over one shoulder and down the back, red and black buti on cream, the red scroll border along its edge and rows of medallions at its foot.

Occasion & styling

Red, black and cream suit a festival, a puja or a wedding, a cultural programme or a formal daytime function, and with no heavy zari weighing down the drape it suits a working day in front of a class or a hall as well. A black blouse, as in the photographs, sharpens the pallu; a red one makes the look more festive, and a cream one keeps it soft for daytime.

Gold or antique jewellery suits it, with small jhumkas and a red bindi. Pleat the pallu neatly over the left shoulder so the heart medallions fall in clear rows, or let it fall loose across the arm to show the whole width of the pattern.

The object

Prerona means inspiration: the saree is named for the women who teach and guide others.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Tussar with red and black motifs.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, never directly over the motifs.
  • Wrap it in muslin or a cotton bag, never plastic, and keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from damp.
  • Air it now and then and refold it along new lines so creases do not set.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
