How a Paat saree is made

The piece in detail

The pallu close up, held towards the camera: gold creeper and eight-petal gold flowers with yellow centres on a deep pink ground, fine yellow stripes along its end and pink tassels below.

What is woven into it

The body is marigold Paat that turns orange in its folds, woven all over with floral sprays in tone-on-tone gold that show and fade as the light moves. Rani-pink creeper bands run across it, scattered with small rani-pink kalka.

A slim rani-pink border carries a gold floral creeper the length of the drape. The pallu is a field of deep rani pink, shading towards red, covered in a close jaal of gold creeper set with eight-petal gold flowers with yellow centres, and small yellow dots between them. Fine yellow stripes close it, and it ends in pink tassels.

The pink border crossing the chest from the shoulder, gold creeper and yellow-centred flowers on it, over a red sleeveless blouse; a pink kalka on the marigold body below.

Occasion & styling

Marigold and rani pink are colours for Bihu, for Durga and Lakshmi Puja and Diwali, for haldi and mehendi, and for a wedding, worn by the bride's sister, mother or a guest. A deep red or rani-pink silk blouse gives the classic pairing; emerald green makes a bolder contrast.

The object

Turn the pallu over and the gold runs across the back wherever the front shows pink, and each yellow dot is its own short length of yarn.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Paat with zari.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: the rani-pink dye is strong, and water can carry pink into the marigold.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the zari.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
  • On the back of the pallu the yellow of the dots lies in short lengths with loose tails: leave them as they are, and never pull one.
