How a Paat saree is made

The piece in detail

The pallu close up. Overlapping silver arches like fish scales, each outlined in fine concentric lines and centred on a violet square.

What is woven into it

The body is lavender Paat, scattered with small silver-toned zari rosettes, each with a violet centre. A silver-toned zari border of fine diagonal stripes and violet-centred flowers runs along the edge: it shows at the shoulder, where the pallu falls, and at the hem of the pleats.

The pallu and the lower panel carry an all-over jaal of overlapping scalloped arches in silver-toned zari, laid like fish scales, each arch outlined in fine concentric lines. Small violet squares sit at the heart of the arches, with tiny silver florets between them.

The pallu closes with a plain lavender band edged in fine silver stripes, then a long, loose silver-white fringe of unwoven threads and, at the very end, a narrow lavender strip.

The lower drape across the lap, silver rosettes on the body above the arched field.

Occasion & styling

Soft and luminous rather than loud, it suits daytime pujas, Rongali Bihu gatherings, engagements and receptions as a guest, baby showers, anniversaries and formal daytime events. Wear it with a lavender or silver-grey silk blouse for one tone, or a deep plum or aubergine blouse for contrast.

The object

Kuwoli means morning mist, and the colours keep to it: a lavender ground, silver-toned zari, and violet only in small touches.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Paat with zari.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: zari can dull when it gets damp.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the zari.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
  • Lay the fringe flat in storage, keep it untangled and never pull at a loose thread.
