How a Tussar saree is made

The piece in detail

The body close, the cloth softly creased: small black stepped diamonds and eight-petal flowers on cream, sharp across the middle of the frame and soft towards the edges.

What is woven into it

The body carries two small black buti in alternate rows: a stepped diamond built from small blocks, and a round flower of eight petals, each flower set between two diamonds of the row above.

The pallu turns dense. A fine band of small motifs opens it; below lie large diamond medallions, each holding a flower, among smaller blossoms and trailing vines, divided by slender patterned columns. Along the edge of the saree runs a narrow black border of small diamonds between fine lines.

From behind, over one shoulder: rows of small black diamonds and flowers on the cream drape, a black border along its edge, and a blouse patterned in black at the back.

Occasion & styling

Black on cream answers a black-and-white dress code, and it suits a formal daytime event, an office celebration, a festival, a cultural evening, a gallery opening or a dinner. Wear it with a black blouse for a sharp line, or a cream one for a softer look.

Silver and oxidised jewellery stand out against it, and so do pearls; bright beads or a red bindi add a single colour. In the photographs it is worn with a cream blouse patterned in black and a red and green bead necklace. Wear the pallu open so the diamond medallions show whole.

The object

Akhor is Assamese for written letters: black on cream and nothing else, like ink on paper.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Tussar with black motifs.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: water can carry the black out of the motifs and into the cream ground, and it does not come back out.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the motifs.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp, direct sun and dark silks, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
