How a Tussar mekhela sador is made

The piece in detail

The drape hanging over the mekhela hem, close up. A line of copper-peach motifs linked by red florets crosses the beige drape; below, a red panel of columns, stars and paired copper-peach birds ends in red checks and scallops, with red tassels at the left.

What is woven into it

The weaver calls this design Soraimiri. Small red star-florets dot the sador, and along its edge runs a line of gosbuta motifs: stepped, roof-shaped forms latticed in copper-peach, each with a red flower at its heart and small birds at its foot, linked by chains of red florets.

The sador end is a panel of red diamond checks, red florets and copper-peach geometric blocks, edged with bands of red leaf scallops and fine stripes, and finished with plump red pom-pom tassels.

The mekhela carries rows of the same motifs above a wide lower panel of red columns, star-florets and pairs of copper-peach birds facing each other, topped with a band of red leaf scallops.

Hands clasped in the lap over the drape, a gold cuff at the wrist. Roof-shaped motifs latticed in copper-peach, each with a red flower at its heart, on the beige ground.

Occasion & styling

Warm and bright: for Bohag and Kati Bihu, Durga Puja, a wedding as a guest, a visit to the namghar or a cultural programme. Wear it with a bright red silk blouse, as here, or a plain Tussar blouse for a softer look.

How to wear a mekhela sador

The mekhela goes on first: step into it, draw it up to the waist, fold the pleats at the front and tuck them in. Then the sador: one end tucked in at the waist, taken round, and the rest carried across the front and over the left shoulder.

The film ends on the gold worn with it: the pendant, the ring, the earrings and the cuff.

The object

Two colours do all the work: vermilion for the flowers, panels and tassels, copper-peach for the latticed motifs and the small birds.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Tussar with red motifs.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: water can carry the vermilion out of the motifs and into the beige ground, and it does not come back out.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the motifs.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
