How a Tussar saree is made

The piece in detail

The saree hung up and seen close: three rows of red rhinoceros on cream, in facing pairs, above the pallu's red field of rhinoceros, deer and birds.

What is woven into it

Rows of red rhinoceros walk the cream body in pairs, each turned to face its neighbour, every one with a single horn.

The pallu opens with a band of small leaf sprigs and fine stripes, then fills edge to edge with a forest: rhinoceros in pairs, standing back to back; between one pair and the next, two deer with antlers leaping towards each other; and birds with raised wings, all among flowers and leaves. The scene repeats row after row, every figure paired with its mirror image, and ends in fine red stripes. Along both edges of the saree runs a red border of rhinoceros and deer between slim stripes and a line of leaf sprigs.

The border close, running across a fold: red rhinoceros and deer between slim stripes and a line of leaf sprigs, with a body rhinoceros on the cream beyond.

Occasion & styling

It suits a festival, a puja, a daytime wedding, or a literary or cultural gathering. The photographs pair it with a deep red blouse; a cream blouse gives a lighter look.

A string of red and green beads suits it, and so does gold. Wear the pallu open over the shoulder so the forest scene shows in full.

The object

The folds of each rhinoceros's hide are lines of the cream ground, left bare inside the red.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Tussar with red motifs.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: water can carry the red out of the motifs and into the cream ground, and it does not come back out.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the motifs.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp, direct sun and dark silks, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
