How a Paat gamusa is made

The piece in detail

A woven end panel close up: red and gold-coloured creeper bands with flowers and leaves, the motif yarn lying in raised floats over a plain ivory ground.

What is woven into it

The body is plain ivory, and the whole design sits in a single panel at the end. A slim gold-coloured scroll, set with small circles and four-dot florets, opens it. Below run three bands, red, then gold-coloured, then red, each carrying a creeper: a curving stem with pointed leaves, a round flower of many petals and a square medallion with a stepped edge, on a ground of fine diagonal hatching.

Several red stripes run down the long edge and cross the red lines at the end in a small check at the corner. Fine red and gold-coloured lines close the panel, and the cloth finishes in a short fringe of white and red threads.

Hanging down in front of a pale-blue sador with pink tassels, the wearer's hands at her sides, in daylight: a plain ivory length ending in a slim gold scroll border and three bands, red, gold and red, each worked with a flowering creeper. At the corner, red side stripes and a short fringe of white and red threads.

Occasion & styling

Worn over one shoulder, as in the photograph, the plain ivory falls straight and the panel hangs at the hip. It is quiet enough to sit over a mekhela sador without competing with it.

It is a gamusa to give: to elders at Bohag Bihu, to a teacher or a host, to a guest on arrival, to a colleague on retiring. Someone who does not know the custom can simply wear it as a stole.

The object

The same creeper is woven three times across the end, in red, then gold, then red again, on a body left entirely plain.

Care

  • Dry clean it, at least the first time.
  • If you wash it at home, wash it on its own in cold water with a mild detergent; do not soak, bleach or wring it, and dry it flat in the shade.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, through a thin cotton cloth.
  • Fold it in muslin, away from damp, and refold it now and then so the creases do not set.
  • Keep perfume off the cloth.
