How a Paat mekhela sador is made

The piece in detail

The drape folded diagonally. A wide band of rose-gold rosette lattice running across the emerald ground between rows of floral buti.

What is woven into it

This set is woven with the Jethipotiya motif, the weaver's own name for it, in antique rose-gold zari on emerald green.

The sador body is scattered with ornate floral buti and edged with a scalloped zari border that frames the shoulder and neckline like lace. Its end opens into a panel of interlinked floral rosettes set in a fine lattice, with columns of buti between the bands, then green-and-gold stripes and a row of green-and-gold tassels.

The mekhela carries the same buti across its body and a deep rosette-lattice panel towards the hem, so the two pieces read as one when worn.

The striped sador end hanging over the mekhela hem, a line of green and gold tassels beside panels of rose-gold rosette lattice.

Occasion & styling

For weddings and receptions, Bihu, Durga Puja, anniversaries and festive evenings, wear it with the matching green blouse, with zari buti and a scalloped border, as shown.

Antique-gold or rose-gold jewellery suits the zari best: a Junbiri, Dugdugi or Golpata, or a slim gold chain by day. Pleat the sador over the left shoulder and let the tasselled end fall free, so the rosette panel shows.

How to wear a mekhela sador

The mekhela goes on first: step into it, draw it up to the waist, fold the pleats at the front and tuck them in. Then the sador: one end tucked in at the waist, taken round, and the rest carried across the front and over the left shoulder.

The film ends on the gold worn with it: the pendant, the ring, the earrings and the cuff.

The object

Morakot is emerald in Assamese. The zari is antique rose-gold rather than yellow gold, and on this green that is the whole difference.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Paat with zari.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: zari can dull when it gets damp.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, through a cotton cloth, and keep the iron off the scalloped border and the rosette panels.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
