How a Paat gamusa is made

The piece in detail

One end close up, hanging against a pale-blue sador with pink and black flowers: two red crested birds face a flowering plant, a red paisley above each, between rows of small leaf shapes, on a cream ground shot with gold, over red and white stripes. A pillared hall with a polished floor is out of focus behind.

What is woven into it

The body is white, crossed edge to edge by fine lines of a metallic gold-coloured thread that make an even check. Broad gold bands cross it, each carrying a red japi, the wide hat of bamboo and palm leaf that stands in Assam for welcome. Red stripes, crossed by the gold check, run down both long edges.

The richest work is at the two ends. On a cream ground shot with gold, a pair of red peacocks face a flowering plant, with red paisleys (kalka) above them, between two rows of small leaf shapes. Fine red and gold lines finish each end, and the cloth closes in a short white fringe.

Hanging from the shoulders over a black blouse and a pale-blue sador, both ends falling down the front with the hands crossed over them at the waist, a silver ring on one finger. The white cloth is checked in fine gold lines, with red hat-shaped japi on broad gold bands, and each end is a dense red panel of birds and paisleys.

Occasion & styling

Worn round the neck with both ends hanging in front, as in the photographs; men and women wear it the same way. With gold through the whole body it is a gamusa for the larger occasions: a wedding or an engagement, an anniversary, a guest being honoured at a function.

It is also given as a gift: to a couple, to the elders of a family, or to someone being thanked in public. After the day it can be folded away in muslin or kept out at home.

The object

Both ends carry the full peacock panel, so worn round the neck the two panels hang side by side.

Care

  • Dry clean it, at least the first time.
  • If you wash it at home, wash it on its own in cold water with a mild detergent; do not soak, bleach or wring it, and dry it flat in the shade.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, through a thin cotton cloth.
  • Fold it in muslin, away from damp, and refold it now and then so the creases do not set.
  • Keep perfume off the cloth.
