- Material & craftsmanship
- Kesa Paat is mulberry silk, named from the Assamese kẽsa, raw; this one is light, a little crisp and matte rather than glossy. Kathphool mushrooms in gold-toned zari are woven into the ivory as an extra weft, with silver-toned accents in the lattice of the end panels.
- What arrives
- 1 mekhela + 1 sador + 1 matching unstitched blouse piece
The piece in detail

What is woven into it
The motif is the Kathphool buta, the mushroom, woven in gold-toned zari on an ivory-white ground. Each mushroom has a dotted cap and a slender stem.
The sador is scattered with gold mushrooms and edged with a slim zari border of fine geometric work. Its end opens into a panel of leaf-and-diamond lattice in gold with silver-toned accents, then gold stripes and a row of gold tassels.
The mekhela carries fine gold stripes and a deep lower panel of the same lattice, so its hem and the sador's end answer each other when it is worn.

Occasion & styling
Ivory and gold is a classic Assamese choice for Bihu, weddings, pujas, temple visits, anniversaries and formal daytime events. Because the ground is ivory, the blouse can be almost any colour: gold-beige for a tonal look, as shown, or red, maroon, bottle green or black for contrast.
Gold jewellery suits it: a Junbiri, Dugdugi or Golpata, or a fine gold chain by day. Hold the sador end open, or pleat it over the shoulder, so the lattice panel and the tassels show.
How to wear a mekhela sador
The mekhela goes on first: step into it, draw it up to the waist, fold the pleats at the front and tuck them in. Then the sador: one end tucked in at the waist, taken round, and the rest carried across the front and over the left shoulder.
The film ends on the gold worn with it: the pendant, the ring, the earrings and the cuff.
The object
Each gold mushroom has a smaller one growing at its foot and a tuft of silver-toned grass beside its stem.

Care
- Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Kesa Paat with zari.
- Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: zari can dull when it gets damp.
- Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the zari.
- Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
- Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth: on an ivory ground any mark shows.
