How a Tussar mekhela sador is made

The piece in detail

A corner of the drape close up. Red birds, red trees and small green and yellow marks on the beige ground, beside wide red bands of diamonds and rosettes edged with fine yellow lines.

What is woven into it

The weaver calls this design GosMari. Small red birds and stylised red trees are scattered over the golden-beige body of the sador, with little florets in green and yellow between them.

Its long edge carries a wide red border, a dense lattice of diamonds and rosettes in red, green and yellow, between fine golden lines. Towards the end, slender stripes of green, red and yellow lead into a red end panel worked edge to edge in the same lattice.

The mekhela repeats that lattice in a deep red lower panel.

The border where it crosses the chest, worn with a thin gold necklace and a red blouse. A wide red band of diamonds and rosettes in red, green and yellow on the beige ground, with red birds and trees beside it.

Occasion & styling

For festivals, weddings, pujas, cultural programmes and family celebrations. Wear it with a red silk blouse, as here, for the classic pairing, or a plain Tussar blouse for a softer, tonal one.

How to wear a mekhela sador

The mekhela goes on first: step into it, draw it up to the waist, fold the pleats at the front and tuck them in. Then the sador: one end tucked in at the waist, taken round, and the rest carried across the front and over the left shoulder.

The film ends on the gold worn with it: the pendant, the ring, the earrings and the cuff.

The object

Dense red lattice at the border, the end and the hem, and open golden-beige ground between, where the red birds and trees stand.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Tussar with red motifs.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: water can carry the red out of the motifs and into the beige ground, and it does not come back out.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the motifs.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
