How a Muga saree is made

The piece in detail

The pallu close: red trees branching between hexagonal medallions, birds in pairs facing each other across each trunk, rosettes in the spaces.

What is woven into it

The body is golden-beige Muga with two small red buti set evenly across it in turn: a flower of eight petals and a compact stepped block.

The pallu is a dense field of red. Tall trees, the gos, branch upward between large hexagonal and diamond medallions filled with rosettes; birds stand among the branches, and more rosettes fill the spaces. A band of red leaf-drops and fine red stripes frames the pallu, which ends in a plain Muga edge and a light fringe.

The drape across the chest, close: small red eight-petal flowers and stepped blocks in turn on gold silk, below a red and green bead necklace with a small gold pendant.

Occasion & styling

Red on golden Muga is the combination Assam reaches for at a wedding and in a bride's trousseau, and it suits Rongali Bihu, a puja or a ceremony at the namghar as well. Wear it with a blouse of matching Muga, or with deep red silk to pick up the motifs.

Assamese gold belongs with it, a Junbiri, a Dugdugi, Gamkharu or Lokaparo earrings, and so does the red and green bead necklace in the photographs. Let the pallu fall open down the back or over the arm so the trees and birds can be seen whole.

The object

In the pallu the birds come in pairs, one each side of a tree, each turned to face the other.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Muga with red motifs.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: the gold is undyed and the red is not, and water can carry the red into the gold.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the motifs.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth, and give it no polish or sheen treatment.
