How a Muga saree is made

The piece in detail

The pallu close, folded over the knee: ivory paisleys filled with flowers beside diagonal bands of diamond lattice, dotted with golden-orange.

What is woven into it

The body is golden-beige Muga, scattered with small two-tone buti: a golden-orange leaf beside an ivory bud. A slim border of ivory floral bands, set with small golden-orange diamonds, runs along both edges.

The pallu is dense ivory Eri work. Large paisleys, the kalka, filled with flowers and dotted with golden-orange, alternate with diagonal bands of diamond lattice, the heart of each diamond in golden-orange, and small rosettes fill the spaces between. Several stacked bands of stepped flowers and geometric work close the pallu, which ends in a soft, loose fringe.

At the neckline, the ivory and golden-orange border crossing the collarbone, small two-tone motifs below it, worn with a red and green bead necklace and a crescent pendant.

Occasion & styling

Gold and ivory is the classic Assamese pairing: for a wedding, worn as the bride's mother, sister or a guest, for Bihu, prayers at the namghar, a puja, an anniversary or a formal cultural event. Wear it with a blouse of matching Muga or gold-beige, or with deep red or maroon for contrast.

In the photographs it is worn with a red and green bead necklace and a crescent pendant; a Junbiri, a Dugdugi or Gamkharu suit it as well. Let the pallu fall open and long to show the paisleys, or pleat it over the shoulder for a neater daytime drape.

The object

The ivory is Eri, a spun silk, and it stays matte where the Muga ground shines.

  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth, and give it no polish or sheen treatment.
