How a Tussar mekhela sador is made

The piece in detail

The lower mekhela close up. Rows of large red paisleys set in alternating directions, above a red scalloped hem.

What is woven into it

The set is built on the Mogor, the paisley, woven bold in vermilion red: each one filled solid and drawn with a fine inner flower inside a ring of small dots.

The sador keeps a plain golden-cream body. Along its edge runs a continuous chain of Mogor, framed by a red zigzag band and fine red stripes, and the end finishes in red stripes and small red tassels.

On the mekhela the Mogor fill the lower half in rows, turned in alternating directions, and close at the hem in a red band of leaves and scallops.

The border across the collarbone, worn with a red and cream bead necklace. Large red paisleys outlined in fine detail against the cream ground.

Occasion & styling

Clean but festive, it suits Bihu, pujas, a wedding where you are a guest, Namghar visits, office celebrations and cultural programmes. It is shown with a maroon blouse; a deep red blouse works the same way, and a golden-cream one gives a softer, tonal look.

Pleat the sador over the shoulder so the Mogor border frames the neckline, and let the tasselled end fall free.

How to wear a mekhela sador

The mekhela goes on first: step into it, draw it up to the waist, fold the pleats at the front and tuck them in. Then the sador: one end tucked in at the waist, taken round, and the rest carried across the front and over the left shoulder.

The film ends on the gold worn with it: the pendant, the ring, the earrings and the cuff.

The object

The body is left plain. Every motif is gathered at the borders and the hem, which is a decision about where the eye goes rather than about how much work went in.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Tussar with red motifs.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: water can carry the red out of the motifs and into the pale ground, and it does not come back out.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the motifs.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
