The piece in detail

What is woven into it
A small geometric jaal of soft gold-toned zari covers the golden-peach ground of both pieces: florets, squares and diamonds, woven tone on tone.
At the sador end, a deep panel of gold-toned zari lattice carries stepped bands, columns of red and green blocks, star-florets and pairs of small gold birds facing each other; below them the zari opens into a fine diamond grid. A band of red flowers on a scrolling vine frames the panel, and the end finishes in a soft, unwoven fringe.
The mekhela carries the same zari texture, with red floral-vine borders, gold zigzag stripes and a lattice panel to match the sador's end.

Occasion & styling
Rich but warm: for weddings, festival days, cultural programmes and evenings out. Wear it with a deep maroon silk blouse, as here, or a red or bottle-green one to pick up the colours of the sador end.
Assamese gold finishes it: a Junbiri, a Dugdugi or a Gamkharu. Drape the sador so its red and green end falls open at the front and the whole lattice panel shows.
How to wear a mekhela sador
The mekhela goes on first: step into it, draw it up to the waist, fold the pleats at the front and tuck them in. Then the sador: one end tucked in at the waist, taken round, and the rest carried across the front and over the left shoulder.
The film ends on the gold worn with it: the pendant, the ring, the earrings and the cuff.
The object
Mati means earth. The zari through the ground is the same tone as the silk, so it reads as texture rather than as ornament until it catches the light.

Care
- Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Tussar with zari.
- Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: zari can dull when it gets damp.
- Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the zari.
- Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
- Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth, where they can mark the zari.
