How a Paat mekhela sador is made

The piece in detail

The rose-pink drape close up, scattered with small magenta square buti, over the magenta mekhela and its band of zari rosettes.

What is woven into it

The motif is the paisley, kalka, woven in golden-orange zari. Each paisley holds a round, wheel-like rosette medallion with fine radiating detail, and the tall paisleys on the mekhela curl at the tip.

The sador is soft rose-pink, scattered with small magenta square buti and edged with a slim golden-orange zari border of tiny florets. Its end carries a band of zari paisleys with rosette medallions and finishes in magenta tassels.

The mekhela is a vivid magenta-pink, dotted all over with tiny zari diamond buti. Its lower half is filled with tall zari paisleys, each set with a rosette medallion, in rows that alternate in direction above a golden-orange zari hem.

The rose-pink sador hanging in folds, small magenta square buti across a surface that shifts between pink and lilac.

Occasion & styling

For pujas, festivals, weddings and receptions, and family celebrations. Wear it with a gold-beige blouse, as shown, or a magenta silk blouse that matches the mekhela.

How to wear a mekhela sador

The mekhela goes on first: step into it, draw it up to the waist, fold the pleats at the front and tuck them in. Then the sador: one end tucked in at the waist, taken round, and the rest carried across the front and over the left shoulder.

The film ends on the gold worn with it: the pendant, the ring, the earrings and the cuff.

The object

The sador and the mekhela are two different colours on purpose. The rose-pink is a shot weave, so it moves between pink and lilac as it turns.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Paat with zari.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: zari can dull when it gets damp.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the golden-orange zari.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
