How a Paat mekhela sador is made

The piece in detail

The drape over the shoulder close up: the same leafy paisley woven in saffron and in gold-toned zari, small florets between, under a broad zari border and a bead necklace with a crescent pendant.

What is woven into it

The paisley, kalka, runs through the whole set, some woven in saffron silk and some in gold-toned zari, each with fine leafy patterning inside its curve.

The sador carries these paisleys across its body and a broad zari border along its edge. Its end is worked in bands of zari patterning dotted with saffron and finishes in a row of saffron tassels.

The mekhela mixes the paisleys with small zari florets and deepens into bands of zari towards the hem.

The shoulder and sleeve: a beige blouse whose sleeve is edged with zari scrolls and saffron florets, the sador's zari border across the chest, a red bead necklace with a crescent pendant.

Occasion & styling

It suits pujas and temple ceremonies, festivals, weddings and receptions, housewarmings and anniversaries. Wear it with the matching beige blouse, its sleeve edged in zari and saffron florets, as shown, or an orange silk blouse to lift the saffron.

Gold partners the zari: a Junbiri or Dugdugi, temple gold, or a bead-and-gold necklace like the one shown. Let the sador fall long from the shoulder so the saffron tassels edge the drape to the hem.

How to wear a mekhela sador

The mekhela goes on first: step into it, draw it up to the waist, fold the pleats at the front and tuck them in. Then the sador: one end tucked in at the waist, taken round, and the rest carried across the front and over the left shoulder.

The film ends on the gold worn with it: the pendant, the ring, the earrings and the cuff.

The object

The saffron paisleys and the gold ones are the same figure, leaf for leaf; only the yarn changes.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Paat with zari.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: zari can dull when it gets damp.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the zari.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
  • Keep the tassels untangled, and never pull at a loose thread.
