How a Paat mekhela sador is made

The piece in detail

The sador end in raking sun: red and green squares, round gold flowers and gold fan borders, then red and gold stripes and small black, red and green tassels flecked with gold along the edge.

What is woven into it

Against the black, three colours do the work: gold, red and green.

Small red and green squares are scattered across both pieces like confetti. Along the sador runs a line of round flowers in gold-toned zari, each with a scalloped outline and a red or green heart. The sador's edge is a border of small fan shapes tipped with red, traced by a fine red line and rows of tiny gold dots, and its end closes in red and gold stripes and small tassels.

The mekhela repeats the squares and the gold flowers and is crossed by slim bands of gold fans.

The sador's border close up where it crosses the mekhela: a row of small gold fan shapes tipped with red and traced by a fine red line, red and green squares on the black.

Occasion & styling

Wear it to festivals, evening weddings and receptions, sangeet nights, parties and cultural programmes, with a bright red silk blouse, as shown, or pick up the green or the gold instead.

Gold shows well against black: a Junbiri or Dugdugi, or a single statement piece. Drape the sador so its border runs diagonally across the front, with the line of flowers following it.

How to wear a mekhela sador

The mekhela goes on first: step into it, draw it up to the waist, fold the pleats at the front and tuck them in. Then the sador: one end tucked in at the waist, taken round, and the rest carried across the front and over the left shoulder.

The film ends on the gold worn with it: the pendant, the ring, the earrings and the cuff.

The object

Along the sador, the round gold flowers alternate their hearts: one red, the next green.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Paat with zari.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: zari can dull when it gets damp.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the zari.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp, direct sun and pale silks, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
