The piece in detail

What is woven into it
The design is a flowering creeper, slender stems carrying blossoms and curling leaves, worked in black and in a soft tone-on-tone gold.
The sador keeps a plain golden-cream body, edged with a slim border of small black four-petal florets running beside a wavy gold line. Its end carries black creepers alternating with gold ones, then rows of black banding and wavy gold lines, and finishes in tassels of black and of gold.
On the mekhela the creepers climb from the hem in alternating columns of black and gold, above a hem band striped in black and gold.

Occasion & styling
Black on golden-cream works in the evening as well as by day: a reception, a formal dinner, a wedding, a puja, a festival or a cultural programme. Wear it with a black silk blouse, as here, for a sharp line, or a gold-beige blouse for a softer, tonal one.
With the black blouse, gold stands out: a Junbiri or a Dugdugi, temple gold, or a plain gold chain. Pleat the sador over the shoulder so the black border frames the neckline, and let the tasselled end fall free to show the creepers and the stripes.
How to wear a mekhela sador
The mekhela goes on first: step into it, draw it up to the waist, fold the pleats at the front and tuck them in. Then the sador: one end tucked in at the waist, taken round, and the rest carried across the front and over the left shoulder.
The film ends on the gold worn with it: the pendant, the ring, the earrings and the cuff.
The object
Every black creeper has a twin beside it in soft gold, so the pattern reads as light and shadow.

Care
- Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Tussar with black motifs.
- Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: water can carry the black out of the motifs and into the pale ground, and it does not come back out.
- Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the motifs.
- Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
- Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
