How a Tussar mekhela sador is made

The piece in detail

The hem of the mekhela close up. A wide green border of interlaced arches under a scalloped edge, leafy sprays rising above it, and the end of the sador hanging at the left in a band of green vines and stripes.

What is woven into it

Small leaf-green diamond buti are spaced far apart over both pieces, leaving the golden-beige silk room.

The mekhela is the showpiece. A wide border of interlaced arches runs along the hem under a scalloped edge, and from it stepped bands of leafy scrollwork climb across the lower half like a staircase.

The sador stays light and open until its end, which closes in a green panel of curling vines and round blossoms, then fine dashed stripes and a soft fringe.

Seen from behind, a golden-beige blouse with a round open back, and the sador over the shoulder scattered with small green diamonds.

Occasion & styling

Fresh and calm, it suits festivals, mehendi and haldi, baby showers, pujas, daytime weddings and garden functions. It is shown with a matching golden-beige blouse; a deep green blouse brings the motifs forward.

Here it is worn with a fine gold bead necklace and a gold bangle, the sador taken over the shoulder with its green end falling to the side, so the stepped pattern of the mekhela stays in full view.

How to wear a mekhela sador

The mekhela goes on first: step into it, draw it up to the waist, fold the pleats at the front and tuck them in. Then the sador: one end tucked in at the waist, taken round, and the rest carried across the front and over the left shoulder.

The film ends on the gold worn with it: the pendant, the ring, the earrings and the cuff.

The object

One colour does all of it: the buti, the stepped scrolls on the mekhela and the vine panel on the sador are the same leaf green.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Tussar with green motifs.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: water can carry the green out of the motifs and into the pale ground, and it does not come back out.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the motifs.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
