How a Tussar mekhela sador is made

The piece in detail

The lap close up. Small four-petal motifs in orange, black and gold across the cream body, the end of the sador hanging down in lines of tiny checks with orange and black tassels, and a narrow band of gold flowers at the hem.

What is woven into it

Both pieces are scattered with small four-petal buti in orange, black and gold, set well apart.

The sador is edged with a narrow running band of small gold flowers with black centres. Its end carries lines of tiny black-and-gold checks and finishes in a row of tassels, orange and black by turns, each tied on a twisted cord.

The mekhela repeats the scattered buti and closes at the hem with the same narrow band of flowers.

The neckline close up: a golden blouse with an orange sleeve, the sador's edge of small gold flowers with black centres crossing below the collarbone, and a necklace of red and pale beads on a crescent pendant.

Occasion & styling

Fresh and easy to wear, it suits daytime pujas, festival gatherings, family functions and cultural programmes. It is shown with a golden blouse trimmed in orange; an orange blouse also works, or a black one for a sharper contrast.

Beads, terracotta and thread jewellery suit it as well as a Junbiri or Dugdugi; here it is worn with red and pale beads on a crescent pendant. Pleat the sador over the shoulder and let the tasselled end hang free, so the tassels swing as you move.

How to wear a mekhela sador

The mekhela goes on first: step into it, draw it up to the waist, fold the pleats at the front and tuck them in. Then the sador: one end tucked in at the waist, taken round, and the rest carried across the front and over the left shoulder.

The film ends on the gold worn with it: the pendant, the ring, the earrings and the cuff.

The object

Most of what you see is the silk: the buti are spaced so widely that the golden-cream ground carries the set and the orange and black read as points of colour.

Care

  • Dry clean only, and tell the cleaner it is Tussar with orange and black motifs.
  • Never machine-wash it or leave it to soak: water can carry the orange and black out of the motifs and into the pale ground, and it does not come back out.
  • Press it on the reverse at a low setting, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the motifs.
  • Fold it in muslin or cotton, never plastic, away from damp and direct sun, and refold it along new lines every few months.
  • Keep perfume and deodorant off the cloth.
